Why we work with the mind and body
The mind and body operate as one coherent system.
When something triggers you during daily life, here’s what generally happens.
The body responds with sensation - you suddently feel activated. Maybe your stomach drops or your heart races.
Why? To get you to take action.
But most of us don’t actually move. We don’t take action, or allow the emotion to be experienced.
In fact we will probably try to shove down the feeling.
But the feeling is still there. Because it is a physical response, created by a chemical cocktail of something like cortisol and adrenalin.
It’s biologically intelligent.
So next comes repetitive thinking, grasping for solutions, excuses or meaning, because we naturally want to make sense of what’s happening, we want the horrible feeling to go away.
Alas. this intense mental focus has a gripping effect, creating yet more sensation… and none of it is pleasant.
Welcome to the mind-body loop - aka the doom spiral.
The inner workings…
The average person operates from the subconscious (on autopilot) a shocking 95-97% of the day.
Basically it’s in control any time the mind is preoccupied with thinking.
So while you’re busy pondering, your subconscious is referring to your unique database to make decisions on your behalf, like a well meaning auntie.
It’s nature is to steer you towards what you perceive to be pleasurable and away from what you perceive to be painful.
The issue is… a lot of the beliefs that still influence your behaviour today are wildly outdated.
They were stored when you had far less choice, wisdom, and maturity.
Sarah and the donut
Sarah consciously decides ‘Right, this week I’m going to to eat healthily all week’.
It’s Monday. She arrives at work with great intentions. She’s prepped her meals. She’s bossed the gym at 7am!
She eats her blandish lunch for the greater good and so far it’s all going ok.
But later that afternoon she notices she’s been absent mindedly gnawing on a glazed donut at her desk, before she’s even registered what’s happening!
Feeling like a total failure, she binges the 2 remaining donuts, then for good measure, orders a 4 cheese pizza for dinner on the way home, telling herself ‘I’ll start again next week. This week is clearly a write off.’
What the heck just happened?
Engrossed in solving a tricky logistical problem at her desk, Sarah didn’t even notice Janet, her work bestie, popping over and leaving some sugary treats to celebrate a team member’s birthday.
Sarah’s subconscious saw the donut and decided it represented some much needed pleasure,
Remember 95-97% of the day the subconscious is steering.
It was already half eaten before Sarah’s conscious mind could hop back into the driving seat and exert some willpower.
Now multiply this by 1000s of beliefs
Seriously, take a moment to consider what other beliefs your subconscious is also using to make decisions on your behalf.
From birth, the conditioning is heaped on, informing you what being a “good,” useful and obedient citizen means.
Teaching you what makes you safe, accepted and loved within your environment.
Common limiting beliefs:
It’s selfish to put your needs first.
Love depends on how much you give.
Good people are endlessly available to others.
Success = functioning optimally within draining systems.
Quitting makes you a failure. Even after you’ve outgrown a situation, role or relationship.
Being able to ‘manage it all’ is aspirational.
Resting is weak or lazy.
Anger is ugly and means you lack control.
Swallowing down your truth keeps the peace.
Being emotional is a turn off.
People leave or you get punished when you’re honest.
The effects
Conditioning shapes your thoughts, your feelings, behaviour and choices…
And you call it your personality.
‘I’m a high achiever”
“I’m a go getter”
“I’m deeply empathetic”
And so you go through the motions, day to day, juggling it all, shape shifting living up to these ideals, trying to avoid the uncomfortable feelings.
You might even get sick, Until one day the pain of disconnection feels unbearable.
Nothing seems to feel nourishing.
Your body feels like a stranger.
You don’t even know who you are anymore.
Why this is great news!
This is the turning point.
It’s certainly when most of my clients find me.
We often breakdown to break through.
It’s time to start challenging the beliefs running the show and stealing your energy.
Time to start becoming more present. reconnecting to your body and learning to trust its signals, instead of overriding them.
Time to take back control of your life.
Since your current reality is not so much about who you ARE…
It’s a manifestation of what you learned you had to DO.
And it can all change.
